Market introduction:

Malaysia's oil and natural gas market is a key pillar supporting the country's economic lifeline. It not only contributes about 20% of government revenue, but also firmly positions Malaysia among the world's major LNG exporters. As of 2021, Malaysia is Southeast Asia's second-largest oil and gas producer and the world's fifth-largest LNG producer (LNG) exporting country. Malaysia is strategically located on an important route for maritime energy trade. The world's top liquefied natural gas complex located in Bintulu, Sarawak, is the heart of the country's export earnings, and its products have long been supplied to Asian markets such as China and Japan. At the same time, downstream industries are also constantly upgrading. The integrated petrochemical center in Pengerang, Johor is its flagship project towards a high value-added industrial chain. The petrochemical industry is an important pillar of the Malaysian economy, contributing toGDP 7%, accounting for 12.5% of the total manufacturing value, and is expected to have an average annual compound growth rate of 5%-6% from 2022 to 2028. From the perspective of development factors, Malaysia has an advantageous geographical location, guarding the Strait of Malacca, and is a hub for entering the ASEAN market. Its proven oil reserves are 2.7 billion barrels and natural gas reserves are 900 billion cubic meters, providing a stable supply of raw materials for the petrochemical industry.

Looking ahead, the Malaysian oil and gas market stands at a crossroads in the energy transition. While responding to the global decarbonization trend, Petronas is actively positioning natural gas as a key "transition fuel" and announced a 2050 net-zero emissions target, strategically investing in renewable energy, hydrogen energy and carbon capture technology. In the fields of deepwater development, marginal oil fields, and new technologies and services brought about by the energy transition, the market has reserved broad space for capable partners.

natural gas: Malaysia is rich in natural gas resources, mainly due to its location in the Southeast Asian waters, one of the richest oil and gas resource areas in the world. Malaysia's natural gas reserves are estimated to be among the largest in the Asia-Pacific region. The export market is an important part of Malaysia's natural gas industry. Malaysia’s natural gas is mainly produced through pipelines and liquefied natural gas (LNG) exported to neighboring countries and international markets. in, Singapore It is Malaysia’s largest natural gas export destination. In addition, Japan、South Korea and China and other countries are also its main export markets. The Malaysian government actively promotes the use of natural gas to reduce dependence on oil and lower greenhouse gas emissions. There is an increasing demand for natural gas in and around Malaysia. Most countries want to reduce carbon emissions to control ambient air quality, which increases natural gas consumption in various end-user sectors. The Satu Malaysia Terminal is a liquefied natural gas terminal located in the Malaysian state of Sarawak. It consists of three LNG trains with an annual production capacity of 8.1 million tons (MTPA). It is part of the Malaysia LNG Complex, also known as the Petronas Bintulu LNG Complex. As of 2022, the country's natural gas imports will be approximately 3.8 billion cubic meters/day.

oil: The refining industry in Malaysia is growing significantly due to the increasing demand for refined products from the chemical, petrochemical and transportation industries. Sales of refined petroleum products in Malaysia have grown steadily over the years. The increase in refined petroleum products is mainly attributed to the growing demand for LPG as a household cooking fuel and especially as a transportation fuel. According to the Department of Statistics Malaysia, in 2021, Malaysia produced approximately 2.7 million tons of LPG (LPG). The country's LPG production has been increasing since 2013, with output reaching 2.53 million tons. Malaysia has invested heavily in refining activities over the past two decades to meet the demand for domestically supplied petroleum products. As of 2022, Malaysia has approximately 955,000 barrels at 7 facilities spread across the country/day’s refining capacity. As part of Malaysia's goal to build refining and storage hubs to meet domestic demand for refined petroleum products, Petronas has invested about US$16 billion in integrated refining and petrochemical development projects in Johor (RAPID).At the same time, nearly US$11 billion has been invested in related facilities. The project has a nominal capacity of 279,000 barrels/It is expected to be fully put into production by the end of 2022. RAPID The facility will be the first in the country to produce products that comply with the European V standard diesel and gasoline refineries, thereby reducing CO2 emission levels. However, as demand for petroleum products continues to grow and Malaysia focuses on self-reliance to meet demand, the region's downstream infrastructure is expected to increase significantly in the coming years. The country has plans to expand existing refineries or build new ones.
